* Write this sentence – either here or on your blog.
* Copy these instructions as commentary of your sentence.
* Don’t look for your favorite book or your coolest but really the nearest.

Maybe newspapers.

Or perhaps you’ve got some of your own personal pictures on hand.

Now…select maybe 4,5 or 6 pictures…cut them out and get that imagination going.

Grab some paper, your favorite writing utensil and start telling a story by the pictures you’ve hand picked!

Go in order from left to right…and once you’ve written one–REARRANGE– and GET BUSY AGAIN!!

According to Gail Carson Levine in Writing Magic, “a story’s plot is mostly determined by character.”  She uses Cinderalla as an example…if Cinderalla’s character was different would the story still be Cinderalla as we know it today?  Unlikely.

So to develop your plot, your ‘why?’ in the story, it is important to develop your characters.  Who are they?  I mean, really–who are they deep down??

Writing Magic gives the writer tips to know who your character, by creating a questionnaire:

Name:

Nickname:

Kind of being: (Human, animal, alient, fantasy):

Age:

Sex:

Appearance:

Occupation (if applicable):

Family members:

Pets:

Best friend:

Describe his/her room:

Physical characterstics: (posture, gestures, attitude)

Items in his/her pockets/backpack/purse:

Hobbies:

Favorite sports:

Talents, abilities, or powers:

Relationships (how s/he is with other people):

Fears:

Faults:

Good points:

What s/he wants more than anything:

When you know your character you can develop their choices, which often in fiction is some sort of conflict…are they having a hard time with a friend? parent? themselves? Each time they choose to do an action, there is a choice in developing their personality–which helps that story along.  You want the reader to finish your story!!  Often you may know the end of your story…which can nourish the middle of the story. 

Now…get that plot going–:)
